June 26: South Portland, ME
Have you ever wondered why they call it a dense fog advisory?! Because you’d have to be EXTREMELY DENSE to venture out in unfamiliar rocky water with lobster buoys everywhere in practically no visibility. THAT’S why they call it that. But we said we’re going to Maine today so we’re going to Maine.
I am a nervous wreck. We can see maybe 150 feet ahead so we are on top of the lobster buoys when we can finally see them. Debbie is watching the radar and blowing the horn occasionally. I am in the litter box with Peanut.
Luckily, the weather service only has the advisory lasting until 9 at which time I am confident the fog will lift and the blue skies will appear.
When I told Debbie I was nervous she actually suggested I make myself a drink to calm down! What an ASS! She KNOWS we’re completely out of orange juice for mimosas.
In truth, the real shit didn’t start until later. The wind picked up and we started taking green water over the bow. According to the weather, this wasn’t happening. We were in 5-7 foot seas and lobster traps. In fog. It took a few hours before I started mentioning the possibility of peril… it was really rough with 5-7 foot seas versus the 2-3 predicted.
But we were made it through and were greeted at the harbor by Catherine in the water taxi. Then Kris showed up with beer and a sub sandwich. We finished that and Nancy and Jeff appeared with more beer and chowder for dinner! When Catherine got off work, she swung by and we had a final arrival toast. We are fortunate to have great friends in fabulous places from Florida to Maine. Going to bed soon. Love you all!

Congradulations. You made it with stories and memories to share! Stay safe. Shirl
