July 24: Block Island

Let’s talk about moorings for a minute. I know I mentioned it means you aren’t tied to a dock but it also means you have no power outlet, dock water or Wi-Fi. We have a generator but Debbie is reluctant to use it unless it is an emergency. And we have differing opinions of what constitutes an emergency. Me being HOT, for example, is an emergency in my book. I will PAY for the extra gallon of fuel! Turn on the damn air conditioner!

So last night, we opened the windows and enjoyed the benefits of Nantucket’s unseasonably hot weather. Luckily the cats were too busy sniffing through the screens to sleep on top of me like they usually do. I dozed and sweated until about midnight when some ass started an engine inches from my head!

I was bitching to Debbie about what ass would be leaving at midnight?!? Then I realized that 1) Debbie wasn’t there and 2) the running engine was our generator!

I was excited about the prospect of AC when she explained it was just a temporary charge for the freezer to remain cold. After some discussion, the AC went on, we all went to bed and soon I was covered up by cats! That is until 4:15 when the alarm sounded…

The really great news is that we are heading west so the 4 am curtain calls will no longer be an option. By 5 am we were underway for our 87 mile passage.

As we passed Martha’s Vineyard we saw a commotion in the water. There were humpbacks feeding!

The seas were calmer in the morning so we took advantage of that and each took showers while we plowed ahead to Block Island.

The wind continued to build and it was a little bouncy until we got into Block Island. Debbie had manage to snag one of the only slips because there is a fishing tournament in town. So we pulled up and it was sort of one of those Candid Camera “ You can’t be serious!”  moments.

One of the dock hands jumped on, one crawled from boat to boat and Debbie backed Cattitude along a mega yacht in high winds in to our slip!

We walked two miles to get a loaf of bread. I miss the scooters. Then we got a beer at a pub and went back to the boat. The people are not as pretentious as those in Nantucket so it’s a little better fit. A couple we met in Coinjock came by to welcome us! Small world.

I have NO idea how we are getting out of here in the morning! Heading to Milford Connecticut- home of cheap beers and microwaves!
