July 25: Milford, Round 2

I was wrong about the alarm. We had another alarm in the 4 am neighborhood. I rolled out of bed before 5 and we were underway at 5:30. Debbie squeaked the 16.5’ wide boat out of the 18’ wide slot between the Hinkley and the mega yacht!

We said goodbye to Block Island and raced across the Block Island Sound around 7 knots against the tide. There were a lot of logs but the surface of the water was almost smooth!

Once we saw Long Island and entered the Long Island Sound, Debbie’s fur was raised. There were clouds building over Long Island as we headed for Milford, Connecticut. She pushed the throttles a bit and we headed for the mainland.

We lost cell signal so I got out some muffins for breakfast and it reminded me that Kris and Cat had provided us with fresh baked goods. One thing not widely known was that, after we ate, we went up to the fly bridge for coffee. I came back down and surprised Peanut who was in the middle of devouring a scone.  I thought for a minute maybe he just sniffed it but the crumbs on his forehead and whiskers sold him out. So today we had poppyseed muffins.

We arrived in Milford around 2:30 and Debbie immediately started making plans for tomorrow to ensure we hit the tide right at Hell Gate in NYC and we would have a slip. I don’t know how she can call these same people every day and get a different answer!

She managed to book our next slip and determine when we have to be at the mouth of the river in time to ride the tide. I’d be like, “Well, this is as far as we can go!” If it were left to me, we’d still be in St. Augustine.

As we were preparing to head to happy hour, the storm alarm sounded throughout the town. Normal people would stay put. We grabbed our raincoats and headed to the bar for half off beers.

We won’t have much time this time to enjoy Milford but we did get to at least see some of the terrain as opposed to our first visit.

Beautiful town. And the storm fizzled before it got to us. Tomorrow will be another exciting day!
